Lucky Dog Year of the Dog is a savory Thai chile pineapple hot sauce: pronounced pineapple with the flavor of red Thai chiles, layered with toasted onion, roasted garlic, toasted sesame, Aleppo pepper, honey, lime, and hints of Chinese mustard, ginger and rice vinegar. Rather than a hot pineapple sauce, it balances sweet and savory notes.
It was the fourth sauce on Season 9 of Hot Ones, and took first place for mild and medium world beat hot sauces at the 2024 Scovie Awards. On Lucky Dog’s recipe page, it’s the marinade for tequila lime prawns. Lucky Dog Hot Sauce is Scott Zalkind’s company in Hayward, California, and its motto is “Food’s Best Friend”: sauces built to enhance food, not overpower it.

The color-coded labels make the range easy to navigate: Green Label is mild fire-roasted jalapeño and serrano, Red Label is sweet and garlicky, Brown Label brings mustard and chipotle, and Pink Label is applewood-smoked habanero. There’s also alderwood-smoked Dia Del Perro, Heat’s a Peach, Clucky Dog wing sauce and Hell Hound, the hottest, with Carolina reaper, mango and tamarind.
