We find the maker
Farmers’ markets, festivals, competitions, and a lot of tips from customers. We buy direct from the maker wherever we can, so more of what you spend reaches the person who cooked it.
Our story
We taste a maker’s sauce before it earns shelf space
Buying craft hot sauce online used to be a guessing game: great label, no idea what was inside or how hard it would hit. So we built the shop we wanted: 500+ small-batch sauces from more than 90 independent makers, each one tasted before we took them on, every bottle rated on the same four-level heat scale.
How it started
SCOVILLED was started by Clark and Brian, and it grew out of a site they built first, HotSauceFindr. People used it to rate and review hot sauces, keep a list of the bottles in their collection, and discover new ones by entering the flavors, foods and heat they like.
Visitors enjoyed it, but they kept arriving with the same question: where can I buy this? So Clark put his love of building a business together with his passion for hot sauce, and for helping people find new sauces they love.
My favorite thing is introducing someone to a sauce they’ve never tried and getting them hooked.
We opened SCOVILLED in 2022 to put all those makers under one roof and make finding a new sauce as easy as it can be. It’s why every bottle here can be filtered by heat level, flavor, pepper, food pairing, diet and maker. We’re based in Galesburg, Michigan, and we still taste everything and buy direct from the makers wherever we can.
How we choose
Every maker on this site went through the same four steps. It’s why a “medium” here means the same thing across all 90+ makers we carry.
Farmers’ markets, festivals, competitions, and a lot of tips from customers. We buy direct from the maker wherever we can, so more of what you spend reaches the person who cooked it.
A bottle from every new maker, on its own and then on the food it’s actually meant for. If it’s only heat with nothing to taste underneath, it doesn’t make the shelf.
One four-level scale, every time, so mild really means mild and extra hot is a genuine warning, not marketing.
Peppers, ingredients, and the foods it actually works on. That’s what powers the filters, the pairings, and the curation in our subscription box.
The SCOVILLED scale
Scoville numbers on a label describe the pepper, not the bottle. A sauce is always milder than the raw chile it’s built from. So we rate the finished sauce, by tasting it.
Under 2,500 SHU
Flavor first, gentle finish. Everyday sauces you can pour rather than dot.
115 sauces →2,500–30,000 SHU
The everyday sweet spot. Noticeable heat that still lets the food through.
184 sauces →30,000–350,000 SHU
Habanero territory. You’ll feel it, and you’ll want a drink nearby.
94 sauces →350,000+ SHU
Ghost, reaper and scorpion. A seasoning, not a condiment. Use drops.
74 sauces →The people behind the bottles
Every sauce here comes from an independent maker: family operations, farmers’-market regulars, competition winners and Hot Ones alumni. No mass-market shelf filler here.
We source as much as we can straight from the people who cook it, rather than through distributors. Better for them, fresher for you.
Many of our makers grow or buy their peppers within a few miles of their kitchen. That’s why the same sauce can taste a little different season to season, and why we like it.

Hot sauce of the month club
When we asked people what they didn’t like about hot sauce subscription boxes, the answer we heard most was that the sauces weren’t chosen for them. So ours are. Tell us your heat level, the flavors you want, the flavors you don’t, and the food you actually cook, and a real person picks 1, 2 or 3 bottles for you every month.

Where we came from
Before all of this was online, SCOVILLED was a pop-up at markets: a folding table, a banner, and bottles from a whole range of makers, open for anyone to taste. We spent weekends handing out samples, watching which sauces made people raise an eyebrow, and learning what “hot” actually means to somebody who isn’t already obsessed.
Those conversations are the reason the whole site works the way it does: the heat scale, the food pairings, the filters and the questions we ask before curating a box. We’re online-only these days, but the shop is still built on what we learned across that table.
Let customers speak for us
This sauce is probably my favorite of the subscription boxes so far. The flavor is incredible and the heat is perfect. It’s not so hot it ruins the flavor.

Loving the subscription box so far. I look forward to the three new bottles every month.

I’ve had so many sauces from here and other sources. The flavor is the best thing I’ve ever tasted. All of the ingredients are top tier. I know hot sauces.

Questions
Not any more. We started out selling in person at markets and pop-ups, but we’re online-only now, which is what lets us carry 500+ sauces instead of whatever fits on a table.
We taste a maker’s sauce before we take them on, and we only carry small-batch sauces from independent makers. If a bottle is all heat with nothing to taste underneath, it doesn’t make the shelf.
We ship from the USA, within 48 hours of your order. Shipping is free over $75 and free on every subscription box; below that a calculated rate shows at checkout. See our shipping policy.
Please do. A good number of the makers on this site came from customer tips. Send us the name and we’ll go taste it.
