Heartbreaking Dawn’s 1841 is a hot ghost pepper sauce named for 1841, the year it says missionary Miles Bronson arrived among the Naga people, in the region where the bhut jolokia is believed to have originated. The fresh red ghost pepper’s high heat and bright citrus notes sit on a crisp, refreshing base of pear and apple, with carrot, onion, lime and garlic, and no extracts.

Try it on wings and Cajun food, grilled meats and wild game, pork, chicken and sausages, roasted vegetables and stews. It’s vegan and gluten-free.

About the maker

Heartbreaking Dawn's

Heartbreaking Dawn’s makes fruit-forward sauces with a history lesson on the label, starting with its flagship, 1498 Trinidad Scorpion.

1498 is named for the year Columbus reached Trinidad and pairs scorpion and scotch bonnet peppers with apricot, blueberry and carrot. The dated series continues with 1542 Southwestern Habanero and 1841 Ghost Pepper, and the range also includes Cauterizer, Reapercussion, Papa Boi Caribbean Scotch Bonnet, Classic Gold and The Green Verde. Most sit in medium, with a few superhots at the top.

What hot actually means

Where this sits on the scale

30,000–350,000 SHU on the SCOVILLED scale. Habanero territory: heat that lingers, with room left for flavor.
