Heartbreaking Dawn’s 1542 Southwestern Habanero is named for 1542, the year Francisco de Orellana reached the mouth of the Amazon in search of gold and cinnamon, in the region where the chocolate habanero is believed to have originated. The dark brown habanero’s earthy flavor sits on a heavy foundation of garlic and cumin, with carrot, onion and brown sugar.

Heartbreaking Dawn’s calls it a high-heat taco sauce: try it on tacos, burritos, Southwestern food and grilled meats, or in stews, soups and rice. It’s vegan and gluten-free.

About the maker

Heartbreaking Dawn's

Heartbreaking Dawn’s makes fruit-forward sauces with a history lesson on the label, starting with its flagship, 1498 Trinidad Scorpion.

1498 is named for the year Columbus reached Trinidad and pairs scorpion and scotch bonnet peppers with apricot, blueberry and carrot. The dated series continues with 1542 Southwestern Habanero and 1841 Ghost Pepper, and the range also includes Cauterizer, Reapercussion, Papa Boi Caribbean Scotch Bonnet, Classic Gold and The Green Verde. Most sit in medium, with a few superhots at the top.
